The Annoncier Columns have been invented by the printer Ernst Theodor Amandus Litfaß and made their first appearance in Berlin in 1855. In his honor, they were soon named Litfaßsäule. Today, there is an estimated number of 51000 Pillars all over Germany, including 50 in Berlin that are heritage listed.
