To Write or Not To Write

A Dialoge in 30 Quotes

Sometimes, writing does not come easily. Giving birth to a story can be a painful process. While the voices in my head keep reminding me that this idea needs to come out to make room for new ones, this story seriously seems to disagree. In my writing pain, I turned to some quotes …

Turns out, many-a writers have thought those thoughts before, too. So here a few quotes for you that hopefully inspire you to write (or sit in a dark corner with a cozy blanky).

There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.

Maya Angelou

If only this toothache would go away, I could write another chapter on the problem of pain.

C. S. Lewis

Stop aspiring and start writing. If you’re writing, you’re a writer. Write like you’re a goddamn death row inmate and the governor is out of the country and there’s no chance for a pardon. Write like you’re clinging to the edge of a cliff, white knuckles, on your last breath, and you’ve got just one last thing to say, like you’re a bird flying over us and you can see everything, and please, for God’s sake, tell us something that will save us from ourselves.

Alan W. Watts

The thing all writers do best is find ways to avoid writing.
Alan Dean Foster

You don’t start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it’s good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it. That’s why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence.

Octavia E. Butler

The profession of book writing makes horse racing seem like a solid, stable business.

John Steinbeck

Planning to write is not writing. Outlining, researching, talking to people about what you’re doing, none of that is writing. Writing is writing.

E. L. Doctorow

Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing.

Benjamin Franklin

Be ruthless about protecting writing days.

J. K. Rowling

I wish I could write. I get these ideas but I never seem to be able to put them in words.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

In all my life, I have never been free. I have never been able to do anything with freedom, except in the field of my writing.

Langston Hughes

The best time for planning a book is while you’re doing the dishes.

Agatha Christie

A lot of people talk about writing. The secret is to write, not talk.

Jackie Collins

How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live. Henry David Thoreau

Don’t let a single day go by without writing. Cause even garbage eventually becomes compost with a little treatment.

Alex Myers

Anyone who says writing is easy isn’t doing it right.

Amy Joy

So, we need to be selfish at those times.  I am because when I sit down to write, there shouldn’t be any distractions.  As a writer, I’m not seeking popularity, maybe one day that will come, but I’m in this writing thing because I have stories to tell and I want to get them down.  Nobody may ever read them, I may never rise above mediocrity, but I am doing something I love, and very few of us out there can say that unequivocally.

Charles Heath

Talent is extremely common. What is rare is the willingness to endure the life of the writer.

Kurt Vonnegut

The one thing that you have that nobody else has is you. Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.

Neil Gaiman

Many people hear voices when no-one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up in rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.

Meg Chittenden

Quantity produces quality. If you only write a few things, you’re doomed.

Ray Bradbury

So the writer who breeds more words than he needs,

is making a chore for the reader who reads.

Dr. Seuss

Those who write are writers. Those who wait are waiters.

A. Lee Martinez

Writing a book is like telling a joke and having to wait 2 years to know whether or not it was funny.
Alain de Botton

Write it. Shoot it. Publish it. Crochet it, sauté it, whatever — MAKE.

Joss Whedon

No artist tolerates reality.

Friedrich Nietzsche

By the time I was fourteen the nail in my wall would no longer support the weight of the rejection slips impaled upon it. I replaced the nail with a spike and went on writing.

Stephen King

For me, writing is 75 percent procrastinating and 25 percent actually sitting down and working.
Zooey Deschanel

Never think you can’t do something. I definitely never thought I could write a book, and even after I started writing it, I was like, ‘Oh my God, how am I gonna write a book?’ Just set your sights high and reach for the stars. Go live your dreams, and never think you can’t.

Connor Franta

Writing is not a profession but a vocation of unhappiness.

Georges Simenon

to write or not to write quotes for authors

This may just be the way the story goes. Some artists refuse to sell their paintings, others vomit before they go on stage, but choosing a creative lifestyle seems much healthier than sitting in an office with horrible people. It is summer, the sun is shining and I am super motivated. Nothing comes from nothing but something will come from something.

Eventually, erm …

  1. What a super collection this is – I could quite agree with the larger majority of those ‘bonmots’…. But I have to admit, that the first one in its paper doily frame sort of jumped at me – I do hate it when I ‘only’ get quotes like the ones above but then I find myself often quoting other people’s thoughts to situations occuring to me -… not so good!
I think the main ‘target’ or ‘goal’ for all of us who write (whatever it may be) is to carry on – and if any of the above quotes are helping, all the better!
Love from my pretty dried out island right now in grey February, Kiki

    1. Thank you Kiki! When I started this blog, I did motivational quotes more in an ironic tone and then they somewhat grew on me … As for writing, we are not reinventing the wheel here and it seems many people had the same kind of problems/emotions/writing pains. Sometimes it’s just nice to find yourself there, too.
Carry on is a great advise! If you ever wanna get anything done, you just have to keep going.
Sunny greetings from Berlin! (This is the best February in ages)

      1. Thank u! Gonna try! 😊 Have been steadily strengthening since the gallbladder surgery end of June; went today to a SilverSneakers strength class w/my wife. If all goes well this kind of thing’ll help me recover better / quicker 😊

    1. Thank you! It was really meditative putting them together. All those struggles or worries, somebody certainly was there before, too.
