Going Home

The tendency nowadays to wander in the wilderness is delightful to see. Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life. Awakening from the stupefying effects of the vice of over-industry and the deadly apathy of luxury, they are trying as best they can to mix and enrich their own little ongoings with those of Nature, and to get rid of rust and disease. Briskly venturing and roaming, some are washing off sins and cobweb cares of the devil’s spinning in all-day storms on mountains; sauntering in rosiny pinewoods or in gentian meadows, brushing through chaparral, bending down and parting sweet, flowery sprays; tracing rivers to their sources, getting in touch with the nerves of Mother Earth; jumping from rock to rock, feeling the life of them, learning the songs of them, panting in the whole-souled exercise, and rejoicing in the deep, long-drawn breaths of pure wildness. This is fine and natural and full of promise. […]

  1. I couldn’t agree more. MOuntains. Countryside. Forest. Sea. Nature in general. I was raised quite close to Nature, and after living for 30 years in a city of 20 millions, it’s beginning to wear me out.
    All well?

    1. Yes, thank you. I’m getting a bit tired of just seeing the same hood. Hopefully in summer we can at least do little trips. How are you?

      1. Fine thank you. Arranging to see the grandkids more, which is a step ahead. BUt tired too of turning around in the same ‘hood’. Bonne semaine. Gutte woche (?)

  2. We’re lucky to live just less than an hour from the Cleveland National Forest. Our occasional camping weekends bring a special relief– to both mind and body– from our city environment. Hopefully, these places will remain protected forever.

    1. That sounds absolutely beautiful. With camping you’ve given me an idea here 😉 I’m ready to leave the city for a bit! To be honest, looking at Siberia at the moment makes me really wonder, in what kind of environment our children are going to grow up …

  3. What I learned? For example: a life without cinema is easy and possible but I am looking forward of course to the next Berlinale film festival which will hopefully take place again next year 🙂

    1. Oh my, Berlinale & distancing are hard to imagine … Life staying home is easy but I’m looking forward to going somewhere sometime …

      1. Better times to come, a vaccine against COVID19 shall be distributed within the EU before end of this year, well at least this is the plan. Stay tuned and safe!

      2. Interesting. We just have to fight our way through vaccination protesters to the Doc then … But at least you do sound positive! Kudos

  4. Lockdowns significantly improved air pollution. Hopefully humanity has a better appreciation of nature and what we can do to preserve it.

    1. That’s a really good point. I am enjoying slowing down … let’s see for how long those changes stay …
