I didn’t realise that’s how he died. In fact, I hadn’t even realised he was dead at all, and I’m not sure I realised this song was by him, though I’ve known it for ever. I was just reading about him on Wikipedia and found out he was an environmental activist, too, and interested in space, all of which I didn’t know. I loved ‘Annie’s Song’, but I suspect that was a lot to do with the flute version by James Galway who had a Sunday evening (I think) show on the BBC when I was growing up, inspiring me to learn to play the flute. Much later. Much much much less well!
