Devil Fountain

Teufelsbrunnen Magdeburg

The Fauns Fountain [Faunenbrunnen] of Magdeburg has been erected in 1986. The bronze object by Heinrich Appel plays with a classical motif; the medieval town fountain.

Appel created a humoristic scenery depicting everyday life, including a urinating dog as a spout and some lovebirds. One closer look reveals indeed fauns, a symbol for fertility. What appears to be a fallen angel is indeed a woman who gets dried with a towel. It is a rather odd sight with many details to discover. The fountain was soon nicknamed Devil Fountain by the people of Magdeburg.
